How to check your air conditioner

01

Turn the AC off and open the front flap

Most split systems have a flap that lifts up from the front. It should open easily — if it doesn't, check the sides for release clips. Don't force it. You're looking to expose the filters and the fan barrel behind them.

02

Remove the filters

Filters slide out — usually two of them. They should be white or light grey. If they're dark grey, brown, or have visible black spots, mould is already present. Hold them up to a light — you should be able to see through them. If not, they're clogged.

⚠️ Don't scrub the filters dry — you'll release spores into the air. Rinse outdoors with water or let us handle it.
03

Shine your torch at the fan barrel and coils

This is the most important step. With the filters out, shine your phone torch directly at the cylindrical fan barrel and the metal coils behind it. Look carefully — mould often hides in the crevices where the fan blades meet the barrel. Check the coils for black dots, grey patches, or green discoloration.

04

Smell it

Get close to the open unit. A clean AC smells like... nothing. Maybe faint metal. A mould-contaminated AC has a distinct earthy, musty smell — like wet socks or a damp basement. If you've noticed this smell when the AC runs, you've already got your answer.

Dirty to spotless — watch the full process

Clean vs Mouldy

Clean AC
  • Shiny silver metal coils
  • White or off-white filters
  • Fan barrel is clean grey plastic
  • No smell when running
  • Air feels fresh and dry
Danger — Mould Present
  • Black or dark green spots on coils
  • Grey, brown, or black filters
  • Fan barrel has dark patches
  • Musty, earthy smell from vents
  • Symptoms worsen when AC runs

⚠️ Important: Don't DIY a mouldy AC

If you found mould — do not try to scrub it off yourself. Disturbing mould colonies without proper containment equipment (HEPA vacuum, antimicrobial treatment) spreads millions of spores through your house. You'll make the problem worse, not better. A professional clean takes about 45 minutes and we handle the containment.
